How Much Data Does Streaming Actually Use? The Per-Resolution Math

Real bitrate numbers for 480p through 4K, how codecs change the math, and a simple formula to budget a capped plan.

“How much data does streaming use?” has a real answer — it’s just buried under app-specific defaults and codec differences. Here’s the math we use for planning capped plans.

The Base Numbers

Video data usage is bitrate × time. Typical streaming bitrates per resolution, averaged across major platforms:

QualityTypical bitratePer hourPer 2-hour film
480p0.8–1.4 Mbps~0.5 GB~1 GB
720p1.8–3 Mbps~1.1 GB~2.2 GB
1080p4–7 Mbps~2.5 GB~5 GB
1440p8–12 Mbps~4.5 GB~9 GB
4K HDR14–25 Mbps~8.5 GB~17 GB

These are averages — a slow dialogue scene sips data, an action sequence or sports broadcast spikes toward the top of the range. Services encode in chunks, so usage arrives unevenly even at a fixed “quality.”

The Codec Multiplier

Two apps streaming “1080p” can differ by 40%+ because of codecs:

  • H.264 (AVC) — the baseline above
  • HEVC / VP9 — roughly 25–35% less data at the same perceived quality
  • AV1 — roughly 40–50% less than H.264

This is why the same plan lasts longer on platforms that serve AV1 to your device. If your phone supports AV1 hardware decode, you effectively get a bigger data cap for free.

Budgeting a Plan

A practical formula:

monthly budget ÷ daily viewing hours = bitrate you can afford

Example: 30 GB/month, one hour of video daily → ~8 Mbps theoretical ceiling, but after overhead and other apps, target 720p–1080p adaptive rather than fixed 1080p+.

Two hours of nightly 4K is ~500 GB/month — beyond nearly every mobile plan and many capped home connections. That’s not a scare number; it’s why offline downloads and data-saver modes exist.

The App Settings That Matter

  • “Auto” quality isn’t neutral — it chases the highest bitrate your connection allows. Lock a fixed resolution on capped plans.
  • Data-saver modes typically cap bitrate ~40–60% below the standard profile at the same nominal resolution.
  • Download-on-Wi‑Fi settings move data usage to unmetered windows — the single biggest lever for commuters.

The Honest Summary

  • 480p is ~0.5 GB/hour; 4K is ~8.5 GB/hour. Resolution choice matters more than every other setting combined.
  • Codec support quietly doubles or halves what your data buys — it’s worth knowing what your device can decode.
  • If you stream on a capped plan, lock the resolution manually. “Auto” optimizes for quality, not for your budget.
